Early Life and Career

Jerry Alan West was born on May 28, 1938, in Chelyan, West Virginia. He grew up in several towns in the area southeast of Charleston and began playing basketball at an early age. After graduating high school, West played college basketball for West Virginia University, where he became a three-time All-American and led the team to the NCAA Tournament's Final Four in 1959.

Professional Career

In 1960, West was drafted first overall by the Los Angeles Lakers. He played 14 seasons with the Lakers, becoming known as "Mr. Clutch" for his ability to make big shots in关键moments. West averaged 27 points, 5.8 assists, and 5.2 rebounds per game during his NBA career.

Executive Career

After retiring as a player, West became a successful executive. He served as the Lakers' general manager from 1982 to 2000 and helped build the team into a dominant force, winning five NBA championships. West later became the president of basketball operations for the Memphis Grizzlies and the Golden State Warriors.

Legacy

Jerry West is widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players and executives of all time. He was a 12-time All-NBA guard, a 14-time All-Star, and a member of the NBA's 50th and 75th anniversary teams. West's silhouette is used as the logo for the NBA and he is a Hall of Fame inductee as a player, coach, and executive.

West passed away on June 12, 2024, at the age of 86. He left behind a legacy of excellence, determination, and success that continues to inspire basketball fans around the world.
