Milwaukee celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month by recognizing local leaders
Mexican Independence Day Parade and Festival takes place on September 17th
The community of Milwaukee, Wisconsin observes the National Hispanic Heritage Month by acknowledging Hispanic and Latino Americans who made remarkable contributions to the city and the country. Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 to October 15 every year. Many Milwaukee residents participated in a flag-raising ceremony at City Hall on the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month.
The event began with a performance of the American and Mexican national anthems by the United Migrant Opportunity Services (UMOS) Mariachi Band, followed by the raising of the Mexican flag. The flag raising ceremony signifies the start of the month-long celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month in Milwaukee.

Mayor Cavalier Johnson, who is Milwaukee's first elected Hispanic mayor, spoke at the ceremony and recognized the contributions of Milwaukee's Hispanic community. He also expressed solidarity with the local Hispanic leaders. Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley also addressed the gathering and highlighted the strength and diversity of the Hispanic community.
UMOS President and CEO Lupe Martinez spoke about the importance of recognizing and celebrating the history and culture of Hispanic Americans. He also emphasized the community's resilience and determination. Following the flag-raising ceremony, the attendees enjoyed a reception where they could network and enjoy traditional Hispanic food and beverages.
Upcoming Events for Hispanic Heritage Month
Various events are planned throughout the month of September to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in Milwaukee. The Mexican Fiesta Parade and Festival will be one of the main events on September 17th. Every year, thousands of people gather on the city's south side to celebrate Mexican Independence Day with a parade and a festival.
The parade will start at 11 am on Cesar Chavez Drive and continue south on National Avenue. The festival will take place at the south end of Cesar Chavez Drive at the UMOS grounds, and it will feature live music, traditional dance performances, arts & crafts, vendors, and authentic Mexican and Hispanic food.
